When you are trying to purchase a computer power supply, you must consider a few things. You will generically need to know how much power you will need for all the computer parts in your computer, how much power goes to each 12+ volt rail and if the company is known for lasting through the test of time.

I think the first and 3rd one are the most important. I usually try to get the biggest one I can handle because I am a power hog and then I only deal with companies that I trust will not go up in smoke because I am using the computer power supply at its full specifications.

The big deal with 12+ volt rails is because of the power that certain devices can pull from the computer power supply. If you have a couple of high power devices one one rail with a crappy atx power supply you will notice that you will get errors or freezes or maybe the system won't even power up.
