Best Hard Drive

You will find that the best hard drive is sometimes not exactly what you are originally thinking. You are presumably looking for the computer hard drive that will suit your needs for whatever application you need to use it for. You may want to install hard drive into your desktop or plug the best exernal hard drive into a USB or firewire port for backup and mobility reasons.

Before all this you might be wondering what is a hard drive. A pc hard drive is a device that stores data for your computer system. It is the storage part of the brain. You recover data from hard drive by simply navigating to where you or the software programs stored the data within the computer hard drive.

This may all sound simple, but the technologies for this has been as highly challenged as those of the computer cpu, computer ram and computer video card! Everybody wants to put more data in a smaller space so it is a design and technology challenge for the hardware engineers to get smarter to develop this technology faster.

You may find in the near future that you will install hard drive that has living cells within it to store data. They have already done the testing for this, but the only problem is the lifecycle of the cells and their ability to take heat and not die. This would obviously decrease the amount of data you could store in a living cell.

Different Parts of the Best Hard Drive

The parts of an external hard disk drive and an internal hard drive is slightly different for the most part. The only real difference is how they interface with the computer motherboard. A couple different types of interface technologies are available and I will describe them below.

  • Solid State Hard Drives
  • IDE Hard Drive
  • SATA Hard Drive
  • USB External Hard Drive
  • Solid State Hard Drives

Solid state hard drives are the new thing for computer hard drives these days. Seeing that they are new they are obviously way overpriced. I would not invest in one yet unless you have a lot of money to toss out the window. The real big thing about this technology is the fact that it doesn't have any moving parts. If this reminds you of something then you are correct. This ssd hard drive is just like a usb that you plug into your computer.

Now that you don't have to spin a disk around and have a pin touch the data into the disk then you can read and write the data much faster onto the solid state hard drive. You will also notice that you won't need hard drive fans anymore because their will be no heat built up from the computer hard drives. Since there is no disk array then their is no friction.

    IDE Hard Drive

The Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard drives is just a way for the computer hard drive to communicate with the other computer parts. IDE hard drives are actually ATA hard drives as well. IBM made this techonolgy back in 1984 in response to the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA). ATA is just an attachment through a type of ribbon cable from the computer mother board to the internal hard drive.

The best part about IDE/ATA hard drives is the ability to set the jumper cables. These cables identify, which internal hard drive is the master or slave. The master is the one that is holding the operating system. The slave is just a hard drive that holds data that are not Microsoft Windows files. This is where you could store your music and documents at if you want to add more space to your computer without having to reformat hard drive. I will show a video on how to format a hard drive in the section below.

    SATA Hard Drive

A sata hard drive is just an upgrade to replace the IDE/ATA hard drive interface. It is a much faster interface as well. This interface is smaller as well and has become the normal interface for todays computing world. Many people have computers back 2007 and older that still have IDE cables, but if they make an upgrade they will not find their old technology anymore.

A sata interface can produce up to 6 GB/s to your sata hard drive, but if you are interested in an esata external hard drive then you will be pushed back to 3 GB/s and have to use a different cable that looks sort of familiar. This capable is only around 6 feet unlike USB and firewire but provides more speed. At the moment, if you go longer than 6 feet packets can begin to drop.

One of the old timer best hard drives used to be a SCSI hard drive. This was mainly used for tape drives or small hard drives running at 10,000 RPM for speed. This has been discontinued though and you will rarely see this type of hard drive anymore.

    USB External Hard Drive

A USB external hard drive is a pretty simple device. You plug it in just like any other USB device and it shows up and you start putting data on it. Setup is a breeze and this makes it very marketable to a wide range of people. I believe it is the most popular of the external hard drives out on the market. Now that USB 3.0 is coming out it will just get more popular is people look for ways to backup their precious data for a cheaper price. It seems everybody is looking for the best hard drive and cheap hard drives.
